Outsmarting Worry

Mental health problems affect around one in six children. This includes depression, anxiety and behaviour change.

Up to 75% of children today do not receive the support they need to improve their mental health.

Children's mental wellbeing is as important as their physical wellbeing. Good mental health helps children develop resilience to face life's challenges, cope with them and grow up into healthy and fulfilled adults.

Things that can help children and young people with their mental health:

  • Having good health, eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise.
  • Having time and freedom to play indoors and outdoors.
  • Being part of a family that gets on.
  • Being in a school that looks after the wellbeing of their pupils.
  • Taking part in local activities.

Things that affect children and young people's mental health:

  • A traumatic event can affect a child who is already vulnerable.
  • Change can be a trigger, such as moving house, changing school or the birth of a new family member.
  • Young people also experience worries when their bodies change and develop.

A key question to discuss is whether social media have a detrimental effect on children and young people's mental health.
